Aldous in Istanbul
"Aldous
in Istanbul " at Marlusse et Lapin, 14, rue Romain Pilon, Monmarte, is
an exhibition of paintings on photographs; stills from a film by two
young, French film-makers, Gilles Blaize and Julien Trefouel. The film,
" Dreaming Istanbul ", ( currently in production ) has been commissioned
for Istanbul 2010, when Istanbul is to be European City of Culture. It
tracks the English artist, Aldous Eveleigh, wandering and sketching in
Istanbul and includes the film-makers themselves following their journey
through and around the town.
The
half-hour film is cut to show a picture of the city from both the
documentary-makers' and the artist's point of view. Every so often, the
frame freezes and the live-action still becomes the ground for an oil
painting to appear. Recorded stroke by stroke in stop-motion, the
animation dubbed over the scene evolves into an image very different
from the one it started with; often witty, always with a psychological
dimension.
The
photograph, viewed as texture and drained of meaning, is reworked and
embodied into a painting inspired by life in the city. The artist,
infused with the sounds, shapes and action he finds himself surrounded
by, turns pictures of places into paintings about people. The film, a
montage in seven movements, puts soul into geography, bringing a place
on the map to life - evoking the character and psychology of an ancient
city on the water at the cross-roads of the old and the new - in a dream
of Istanbul.
